Ask anyone who has spent time on the Bukit what they miss most about Uluwatu and the answer is usually the same: the sunsets. The peninsula faces west over the Indian Ocean, so almost every evening ends with the sky turning orange, pink and gold over the water. This is our local guide to the best places to watch it, how to time it, and where to go once the sun has dropped.
What time is sunset in Uluwatu?
Because Bali sits close to the equator, sunset barely moves through the year. Expect it roughly between 6:00 PM and 6:40 PM, a little earlier around the middle of the year and a little later around the start of the year. Plan to arrive at your spot 30 to 45 minutes early: the best light happens before the sun touches the horizon, and the popular cliff bars fill up fast.
The dry season (roughly April to October) brings the clearest skies. In the wet season you will get more cloud, but that often makes for the most dramatic colour.
The best sunset spots in Uluwatu
1. Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu)
The classic. This sea temple is perched on a cliff around 70 metres above the ocean, and watching the sun go down from the clifftop path is one of the most memorable things you can do in Bali. Every evening at around 6 PM the Kecak fire dance is performed in the amphitheatre with the sunset as its backdrop. Tickets for the dance are sold separately from temple entry, and prices change, so check at the gate or book ahead.

Good to know: sarongs and sashes are required and provided at the entrance. The resident monkeys are famous for grabbing sunglasses, hats and phones, so keep everything zipped away. Traffic leaving the temple after the Kecak dance can be slow, which makes it a good moment to have a dinner table booked nearby.
2. Single Fin, above Suluban Beach
The Bukit’s best-known sunset bar sits right on the cliff above the Uluwatu surf break. You get a front-row view of surfers catching the last waves while the sky changes colour. It gets busy, especially on weekends, so come early for a spot on the edge.
3. Suluban Beach
Below Single Fin, Suluban is a small beach reached through a gap in the limestone cliffs. At low tide the caves and rock pools glow as the sun goes down. Check the tide before you go, as the beach almost disappears at high tide.
4. Bingin Beach
Bingin is all about laid-back sunsets: small warungs and guesthouses stacked down the cliff, a stairway to the sand and wide reef flats that reflect the sky at low tide. Grab a cold drink at one of the beach warungs and settle in.
5. Padang Padang Beach
Reached through a narrow staircase cut into the rock, Padang Padang is one of Uluwatu’s prettiest coves. It is more of a daytime beach, but staying for the late afternoon light is worth it before the climb back up.
6. Melasti Beach
With its dramatic road cut through white limestone cliffs and wide stretch of sand, Melasti is one of the most photographed beaches on the Bukit. Beach clubs line the sand if you want a lounger and a cocktail for golden hour.
7. Karang Boma Cliffs
For something wilder, Karang Boma is a grassy clifftop near the temple with sweeping views of the coastline. There are no bars or railings here, so stay well back from the edge, but the views are some of the best in Bali.
8. Dreamland and Balangan
Further north on the peninsula, Dreamland and Balangan both have long sandy beaches facing west. Balangan’s clifftop is a quiet alternative to the busier spots further south.
Tips for the perfect Uluwatu sunset
- Arrive early. Aim to be in place 30 to 45 minutes before sunset, especially at Single Fin and the temple.
- Check the tides. Suluban, Bingin and Padang Padang change completely between low and high tide.
- Bring cash. Most beaches and viewpoints charge a small parking or entry fee.
- Mind the stairs. Many beaches involve steep steps, so wear proper sandals and bring a torch for the walk back up.
- Plan your evening. Everyone leaves the beaches and the temple at the same time, so having a dinner spot nearby saves you sitting in traffic.
